Big power, big capability. introductionthe ford super duty pickups offer a pair of superb engines and can tow bumper-pull trailers that weigh up to 17,500 pounds or 24,500 with a fifth-wheel setup. Their bold, handsome exteriors are backed up by cabs that are attractive, functional and comfortable. Lariat and king ranch models are downright luxurious. The f-450 pickup that shares cab and wheel sizes with the f-250 and f-350 remains atop the towing ratings for pickups. the ford super duty got a major overhaul for 2011 with all-new diesel and gasoline engines, a new 6-speed automatic transmission, and new front styling. Changes for the 2012 model year are minor. the 6. 2-liter v8 gasoline engine that comes standard is rated at 385 hp in f-250 models and 316 hp on the majority of f-350 versions. Both engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission; no manual is offered. for 2012, the gas engine may be ordered with a cng/propane prep option. Also, short-bed models (6. 75-foot) offer a factory gooseneck hitch package previously reserved for long beds. there is nothing small about a super duty and even the shortest, plainest version represents three tons of mass. The new diesel is quiet by heavy-duty truck standards. super duty xl and xlt are designed for the cost/benefit analysis small businesses and independents use: a simple, fast trailer hookup, 4wd to get in/out of the job site, and a warm cab they can be blown clean with compressed air. Crew chief allows a dispatcher real-time truck location, speed, and fuel economy, potentially useful for the friday-night parent as well. as usual the top tow and payload ratings are up from mid-year 2011 models, often to numbers that require a commercial driver's license. Best-in-class numbers for heavy-duty pickups sometimes change several times in a year, but they typically apply to just one model. The super duty xl, xlt and lariat trims extend to most models. The super duty f-450 pickup, in long-bed, crew cab 4wd comes standard with the diesel. pricing for heavy-duty pickups takes megabytes given all the possible permutations. A step up in trim level may add a different cab, box length, or engine, which is why a supercab is $3500-$4700 more than a regular cab, and a crew cab is $5000-$6750 beyond a regular cab. Buying up from xl to xlt trim typically adds $2500-$3500, from xlt to lariat $4000-$7500, and lariat to king ranch $3000-$6500. the super duty xl is work-truck, low-budget in nature, with vinyl seats and flooring, black painted grille and bumpers, plain trim, and am/fm stereo, but it does include air conditioning, towing mirrors, trip computer, tilt/telescoping steering wheel and a weight-appropriate receiver hitch. Options are primarily mechanical in nature: diesel, locking differential, larger tires and wheels, snow plow prep, integrated fifth-wheel/gooseneck hitch prep package 380), camper package, off-road package for 4wd, tow command 230), auxiliary switches, dual or larger single alternators, reverse sensors, tailgate step, work solutions in-dash computer 1395) and tool link 1120). Supercabs also include flip-out rear side windows, super and crew get an overhead console, and the f-450 has forged aluminum wheels. super duty xlt adds chrome trim, aluminum wheels, 40/20/40 cloth front seat with under-seat lockable compartment, carpet, cd player, power windows/locks/mirrors, power-adjusted and heated towing mirrors, privacy glass, the integrated brake controller for single-rear wheel trucks, remote keyless entry, mykey, and cruise control. Dimensions are easily given in yards rather than inches. The power stroke badges have been given a hybrid-like green leaf with b20 in reference to the ability to burn biodiesel fuel, but only compared to other huge trucks might a super duty be considered green. regardless of bulging flares or flared nostrils no super duty would be mistaken for anything less than a full-size pickup even with nothing scalable within sight. The clamshell hood essentially shrink-wraps the diesel engine underneath, and the rounded edges and deeper air dam have improved the coefficient of aero drag from about 0. 45 to 0. 425 cd. By comparison, an aerodynamic sedan has a drag coefficient closer to 0. 27. super duty box sides have a large fuel door, which allows room for the additional diesel exhaust fluid fill for diesel versions. They telescope and fold (manual or powered), and include two large convex mirror elements for safe rear vision with the widest street-legal trailers. The towing mirrors include signal repeaters that won't distract the driver. A camera mounted in the tailgate center latch housing linked to a display on the navigation screen or inside the rearview mirror gives the driver a good review of what's behind. an optional tailgate step is available that pops out of the tailgate for an easier step up to the bed; the step is rated at 1000 pounds. A grab handle flips up like a walking stick to further aid stepping up to the bed; the grab handle is rated at 300 pounds. We've found this setup handy at times and it doesn't usually get in the way. The tailgate also includes an assist so the very heavy tailgate feels less heavy. Unlike the toyota tundra, however, the assist doesn't do much to slow the tailgate when lowering it so be careful not to let it slam down.

The great american pony car adds bullitt to its arsenal. introductionthe ford mustang defined the pony car segment in 1964 and was a runaway sales success. It helped create a niche that exploded in popularity with the camaro, firebird, barracuda, cougar, javelin, and challenger. The mustang gt comes with a 300-hp v8 and is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The american pony car has never been better than the current mustang gt. the mustang is available as a coupe or convertible. The mustang v6 deluxe is a nice cruiser and its 4. 0-liter v6 engine is a solid performer, all for around $20,000. But the mustang gt is what the mustang is all about and the basis of the legend. for 2008, a new bullitt model joins the herd. Faithfully styled to celebrate the hero car in the famous chase scene starring steve mcqueen, the 2008 mustang bullitt is tuned to a higher level than the standard gt. Some media have positioned the bullitt as nothing more than a hopped up mustang, but that sells what's going on here a bit short. Rather than simply bolting on some modifications and re-tuning the setup, ford took the higher road, thoroughly re-engineering and painstakingly massaging the bullitt to attain its additional performance. In other words, they did it the hard way, the right way. Ford used technology learned from development of the shelby cars, and the chief engineer for the mustang says technology gained from the development of the bullitt will be used in the next-generation mustang. In any case, the bullitt is more responsive than the mustang gt. Ford plans to build about 7,000 bullitt models. for 2008, three shelby models are available: the 319-hp shelby gt comes in coupe and convertible form along with the 540-hp shelby gt500kr coupe. Its solid rear axle is bouncy on bad pavement, however, and all this comes at a substantial price increase. for 2008, front side airbags come standard on all mustangs, and high-intensity discharge headlights and interior ambient lighting are newly available. while its styling is retro inspired, the mustang is a thoroughly modern car. More importantly, both deliver the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades. retro inspired, to be sure, the mustang is nonetheless a thoroughly modern car. Launched for 2005 with a clean-sheet design, the mustang is faster and more agile than ever. It's also quieter and better built (even the convertible), and it rides more smoothly. Its interior is a throwback to the original mustang, but it's also functional and well finished. For 2006, a new pony package gives v6 mustangs all the show, if not the go, of the v8. The v8s are available with trendy new 18-inch wheels for 2006. a family car, the mustang isn't. Interior space is limited for a car of its exterior dimensions, and the back seat might better be described as a package shelf. Yet the 2006 mustang holds true to an idea that still appeals to people of all ages decades after it was launched. the ford mustang has been an icon of american performance since its introduction in 1964. So trimmed, the mustang looks more aggressively handsome than ever, and nearly identical to the concept cars that grabbed everyone's attention at the 2004 north american international auto show. nothing says modern american sporty car better than this mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of mustang history. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967 model. Everything under the car has been upgraded substantially from previous mustang levels: bigger brakes by nearly 20 percent, completely new front and rear suspension designs that yield much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering, improved engines and new transmissions. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any driver much more of a fighting chance in bad situations by allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time. the engines are mounted to the body with hydraulic engine mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota. We know, because we've driven every generation since the original debuted in the spring of 1964. perhaps most retro of all mustang features is a new-for-2006 pony package for v6 models. This includes a grille with gt-style round fog lamps and a chrome bezel, or corral, around the traditional mustang prancing horse. The package includes 17-inch wheels, front-fender pony badges, a lower door stripe, and a rear spoiler. interiorthe styling themes that so readily identify the 2006 mustang are apparent inside, too. The interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function. there's a very heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with two distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse and tricolor bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. An interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days. Just like the old days. these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and larger overall size, there is a lot more hip, leg, elbow and shoulder room inside this mustang that in any previous generation. We found the front bucket seats to be comfortable, supportive and retentive in hard corners. The 2+2 back seat, however, isn't much more accommodating than before, and it's not a place adults will want to spend any time. the trunk, however, is as large as those in some more overtly practical sedans, and the folding rear seat expands cargo space even further. the basic sound system that comes with the car is pretty darn good. The 500-watt upgrade is reasonably priced in the premium package, and adds a six-cd changer. The 1000-watt upgrade will impress most audiophiles, but the extra subwoofers in the trunk steal a good chunk of cargo space. We'd be inclined to pass on those. driving impressionthe 2006 mustang improves those things that have appealed to so many different kinds of drivers for more than 40 years, and it nearly eliminates some traditionally bad pony car traits. In general, the good has gotten better and the bad, less so. the previous-generation mustang, a modified, welded version of a chassis that dated to 1979, was about as stiff as wet rope.
