After a redesign for 2010, the 2011 mustang gets two new engines, as well as new transmissions and improvements to ride, handling, and noise. So the 2011 mustang represents a significant improvement over the superb 2010 edition of america's pony car, which was a large improvement over the 2004-2009 models, which was a major improvement over what came before that.  the mustang has been in continuous production for 46 straight years, and more than 9 million mustangs have been built and sold to date. That gives the mustang the longest production run of any single model in ford history.  the 2011 ford mustang comes in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and a glass-roof coupe. Each is available in both the traditional v6 model and the v8-powered mustang gt. Both engines are much more powerful this year.  the 3. 7-liter v6 replaces the old 4. 0-liter v6, the new one producing 305 horsepower versus just 210 horses from the older, bigger engine. The new v8 marks the return of the 5. 0. An new all-aluminum engine, the 5. 0-liter v8 in the mustang gt produces 412 horsepower, which is far more than the 315 horsepower of the outgoing 4. 6-liter v8. Both new engines for 2011 get new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions versus the five-speeds of 2010.  the ford shelby gt500 gains power for 2011, with a new aluminum version of the 5. 4-liter v8 producing 550 horsepower instead of the 500 ponies from the 2010 iron-block engine. We have not driven the new shelby gt500. Yet.  the 2011 engines transform the mustang, providing the type of willing power pony car fans will love while improving fuel economy at the same time. The engines are lighter and the car has more rigidity, so the already impressive handling is that much better.  the 2011 mustang is also quieter and more refined than ever, and, more importantly, it's an absolute blast to drive. It is quick off the mark with a brawny sound, crisp handling, a tight suspension, and much improved brakes. Put simply, this is the best mustang ever, and it is the model that other pony car makers should follow.  in addition to the new engines and transmissions, the 2011 mustang gets an additional front z brace and a revised suspension to improve ride quality while also improving handling; new safety features including ford's mykey system, power side mirrors with integral blind spot mirrors, and fold-down rear headrests; electric power steering meant to improve fuel economy while also aiding steering feel; and new features, such as a performance package for v6 models and available brembo brakes for the gt. lineupthe 2011 mustang is offered in v6 base and premium models, v8-powered gt base and premium models, and the supercharged v8-powered gt500, each in coupe and convertible body styles. The comfort group 595) adds heated front seats and a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. With its 2010 redesign, ford gave a nod to the 1969-70 mustang with a new face that features a wider grille opening.  other elements of the redesign could be seen as tributes to the past. The coupe's fastback roofline, unchanged from the last generation, recalls the original 1964. 5 mustang. The chamfered three-element taillamps, which house sequential turn signals that blink from the inside lamp to the outside lamp, were first found on the 1964 thunderbird, then the 1967-68 shelby mustangs and late '60s mercury cougars. And the hockey stick lower character line could be viewed as an homage to the lower portion of the side coves found on mustangs from 1964 to '68.  compared to the last generation body style, ford said the 2010 mustang had 23 percent less aerodynamic lift at the front with a new slotted panel installed under the radiator to direct air, 50 percent better in front/rear lift balance, and seven percent less aerodynamic drag. For 2011, the company has lowered the front air dam and added a front splitter and an underbody aero shield to improve aerodynamics by another 4 percent.  ford took several steps to improve noise, vibration and harshness for the 2010 model year, and the company has done even more for 2011. Additional sound-deadening material on the instrument panel and a rear wheel arch liner help drivers hear the sounds they want (namely the engine) and avoid the sounds that can be a distraction (such as dash creaks and tire noise).  the 3453-pound mustang (3605 pounds for the gt) uses welded steel unibody construction with front and rear subframes to mount the steering and suspension systems, with almost half the body weight in high-strength low-alloy steel. It is by far the lightest of the new breed of pony cars, beating the camaro by 300 pounds and the dodge challenger by as much as 500 pounds. The weight savings are a definite advantage.  the convertible comes standard with a power top with a glass rear window. The top uses two latches that the driver must operate, but they're within arm's reach and they latch and unlatch easily. interioranyone who hasn't been in a mustang for a couple of years will want to take a look at the 2011 model. The interior was much improved for 2010 and there are even more improvements for 2011. The front bucket seats are significantly more comfortable and better looking than the slabs used in the 2009 models, though they could still use more lateral support. The aforementioned noise.

Any of the current mustangs is quieter, better built, better equipped and more refined than ever, but still visually engaging and good fun to drive.  improvements for 2012 include more standard features and a selectable power steering system that changes steering effort and feedback from comfort to normal to sport at the driver's selection.  the big news, however, is the return of the mustang boss 302. It's a modern take on one the great cars in american road-racing lore.  the mustang is available as a coupe, a convertible or a unique glass-roof coupe. The top-selling mustang v6 and gt models are offered in all three body styles, in standard trim or a more feature-laden premium level, with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Even the extra-powerful boss and shelby gt500 mustangs deliver reasonable fuel-economy, given the performance potential. The level of fun varies primarily with the potency of the engine selected.  the standard mustang v6 makes the basic stylistic statement and comes well equipped for about $23,000 with destination charge 28,000 for the convertible). It also delivers 31 mpg highway with the automatic, according to the epa, and it makes quiet, comfortable daily transportation. It gets 26 mpg highway, and is just as easy to live with as the v6, with the same 13. 2 feet of trunk space and folding rear seat.  the new boss 302 is geared toward enthusiast drivers who look forward to track days. The great american pony car adds bullitt to its arsenal. introductionthe ford mustang defined the pony car segment in 1964 and was a runaway sales success. It helped create a niche that exploded in popularity with the camaro, firebird, barracuda, cougar, javelin, and challenger. The mustang gt comes with a 300-hp v8 and is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The american pony car has never been better than the current mustang gt.  the mustang is available as a coupe or convertible. The mustang v6 deluxe is a nice cruiser and its 4. 0-liter v6 engine is a solid performer, all for around $20,000. But the mustang gt is what the mustang is all about and the basis of the legend.  for 2008, a new bullitt model joins the herd. Faithfully styled to celebrate the hero car in the famous chase scene starring steve mcqueen, the 2008 mustang bullitt is tuned to a higher level than the standard gt. Some media have positioned the bullitt as nothing more than a hopped up mustang, but that sells what's going on here a bit short. Rather than simply bolting on some modifications and re-tuning the setup, ford took the higher road, thoroughly re-engineering and painstakingly massaging the bullitt to attain its additional performance. In other words, they did it the hard way, the right way. Ford used technology learned from development of the shelby cars, and the chief engineer for the mustang says technology gained from the development of the bullitt will be used in the next-generation mustang. In any case, the bullitt is more responsive than the mustang gt. Ford plans to build about 7,000 bullitt models.  for 2008, three shelby models are available: the 319-hp shelby gt comes in coupe and convertible form along with the 540-hp shelby gt500kr coupe. Its solid rear axle is bouncy on bad pavement, however, and all this comes at a substantial price increase.  for 2008, front side airbags come standard on all mustangs, and high-intensity discharge headlights and interior ambient lighting are newly available.  while its styling is retro inspired, the mustang is a thoroughly modern car. Forty years after it created an automotive niche all its own, mustang is both true to its roots and better than ever.  the 2006 mustang is available as both a coupe and a convertible, powered by either a v6 or a v8 engine. The v6 deluxe comes well equipped for less than $20,000. The mustang gt boasts a multi-valve, overhead-cam v8 that produces 300 horsepower. Both are available with a manual or automatic transmission. More importantly, both deliver the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades.    retro inspired, to be sure, the mustang is nonetheless a thoroughly modern car. Launched for 2005 with a clean-sheet design, the mustang is faster and more agile than ever. It's also quieter and better built (even the convertible), and it rides more smoothly. Its interior is a throwback to the original mustang, but it's also functional and well finished. For 2006, a new pony package gives v6 mustangs all the show, if not the go, of the v8. The v8s are available with trendy new 18-inch wheels for 2006.  a family car, the mustang isn't. Interior space is limited for a car of its exterior dimensions, and the back seat might better be described as a package shelf. Yet the 2006 mustang holds true to an idea that still appeals to people of all ages decades after it was launched.  the ford mustang has been an icon of american performance since its introduction in 1964. It created the pony car genre, and after 40-plus years of competition with the barracuda, camaro, firebird and others, it's the only one left. We, and a few hundred thousands others, are glad it's still here. lineupthe 2006 ford mustang lineup probably seems more complicated than it really is. Mustang is available as either a fastback coupe or convertible, each with either a v6 or v8 engine. The v6 models focus on value, while the v8 gts focus on performance. All come standard with a five-speed manual transmission, but all are available with a five-speed automatic.  the rest of the difference comes down to trim. The v6 standard coupe 19,115) comes well equipped, with one-touch power windows, power mirrors and door locks, keyless entry, air conditioning, am/fm/cd, tilt steering, speed control, rear window defroster, 16-inch wheels, and a split-folding rear seat. Its 4. 0-liter overhead-cam v6 generates 210 horsepower.    the v6 deluxe coupe 19,215) adds 16-inch machined-face aluminum wheels. The package includes a firmer suspension, a custom grille with fog lamps, pony emblems and 17-inch wheels.  in addition to its 4. 6-liter, 300-horsepower v8, the mustang gt deluxe coupe 25,140) adds in-grille fog lamps, complex reflector halogen headlamps with integral turn signals, a rear spoiler, and performance tires on 17-inch wheels. The gt premium coupe 26,320) comes with the 500-watt cd changer and aberdeen leather-trimmed sport bucket seats.  the gt deluxe convertible 29,965) and gt premium convertible 31,145) have the power-operated soft top.  mustang options include the five-speed automatic transmission 995), an active anti-theft system 255), a 1000-watt audio system 1,295), an interior upgrade package with satin aluminum trim 450). The gts are available with 18-inch wheels 195).  safety features on all mustangs include dual-stage front impact airbags and three-point belts for all seats. Antilock brakes and traction control are standard on the gts and optional on the v6 models 775). Front passenger side-impact airbags 370) are optional on all models, so be sure to order them as they are designed to offer torso protection in a side impact. walkaroundthe 2006 ford mustang follows the trend by offering ever larger wheels. The gt is now available with two distinct 18-inch wheel designs, as well as two new exterior colors: vista blue clearcoat metallic and tungsten grey clearcoat metallic. So trimmed, the mustang looks more aggressively handsome than ever, and nearly identical to the concept cars that grabbed everyone's attention at the 2004 north american international auto show.  nothing says modern american sporty car better than this mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of mustang history. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967 model. Everything under the car has been upgraded substantially from previous mustang levels: bigger brakes by nearly 20 percent, completely new front and rear suspension designs that yield much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering, improved engines and new transmissions. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any driver much more of a fighting chance in bad situations by allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time.  the engines are mounted to the body with hydraulic engine mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota. We know, because we've driven every generation since the original debuted in the spring of 1964.  perhaps most retro of all mustang features is a new-for-2006 pony package for v6 models. This includes a grille with gt-style round fog lamps and a chrome bezel, or corral, around the traditional mustang prancing horse. The package includes 17-inch wheels, front-fender pony badges, a lower door stripe, and a rear spoiler. interiorthe styling themes that so readily identify the 2006 mustang are apparent inside, too. The interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function.  there's a very heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with two distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse and tricolor bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. An interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days. Just like the old days.  these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and larger overall size, there is a lot more hip, leg, elbow and shoulder room inside this mustang that in any previous generation. We found the front bucket seats to be comfortable, supportive and retentive in hard corners. The 2+2 back seat, however, isn't much more accommodating than before, and it's not a place adults will want to spend any time.  the trunk, however, is as large as those in some more overtly practical sedans, and the folding rear seat expands cargo space even further.  the basic sound system that comes with the car is pretty darn good. The 500-watt upgrade is reasonably priced in the premium package, and adds a six-cd changer. The 1000-watt upgrade will impress most audiophiles, but the extra subwoofers in the trunk steal a good chunk of cargo space. We'd be inclined to pass on those. driving impressionthe 2006 mustang improves those things that have appealed to so many different kinds of drivers for more than 40 years, and it nearly eliminates some traditionally bad pony car traits. In general, the good has gotten better and the bad, less so.  the previous-generation mustang, a modified, welded version of a chassis that dated to 1979, was about as stiff as wet rope. Ford claims the current mustang's body/frame is 31 percent stiffer, and we won't argue. This mustang is simply much more rigid and rattle-free than its predecessor. A rigid foundation provides the basis for a host of good things, including improved ride quality, sharper handling and less interior vibration.  the new-found solidity even applies to the convertible. Completely redesigned, better handling, more power. introductionthe ford mustang is all-new for 2010. Everything but the roof on the 2010 mustang is new. And it's all good, all improved over the superb 2004-2009 version of america's pony car.  we found the 2010 mustangs quieter and more refined than the previous models. More important, the 2010 mustang gt is an absolute blast to drive, quick off the mark with a brawny sound. The clutch pedal is light and easy to use in heavy traffic and the manual sifts smoothly. The handling is crisp, the suspension feels tight, and the brakes work better in this latest generation.  the mustang has been in continuous production for 45 straight years, and more than 9 million mustangs have been built and sold to date. That gives the mustang the longest production run of any single model in ford history.  the 2010 ford mustang comes in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and a glass-roof coupe. Each is available in both the traditional v-6 model and the v8-powered mustang gt. Both engines will be available with a choice of a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.  the v-6 coupe and convertible feature an upgraded 4. 0-liter v6 engine rated at 210 horsepower and 240 foot-pounds of torque. The v-6 model comes standard with 17-inch wheels and tires, with 18-inch wheels optional. A rear stabilizer bar now comes standard on the v-6 models, and the entire suspension system has been retuned for more performance feel.  the mustang gt gets a more powerful v8 for 2010, producing 315 horsepower and 325 foot-pounds of torque from 4. 6 liters.  ford's sync electronics, navigation with sirius travel link and a rear-facing camera are among the options never before available on the mustang. lineupthe mustang v-6 coupe starts at $20,995, and the v-6 convertible at $25,995. Pricing for the gt v-8 coupe starts at $27,995, with the gt v-8 convertible at $32,995. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices do not include $850 destination charges.)  options include the five-speed automatic transmission 995), the glass roof option 1995), a navigation package 2195).  a premium package 3000) upgrades with leather six-way power driver seat with power lumbar and two-way adjustable head restraint, bright shift knob, door trim panel inserts, leather wrapped steering wheel w/aluminum spokes, six-gauge cluster w/mycolor, gloss paint center stack and console, satin door speaker surrounds, ambient lighting, bright aluminum accent dash appliques, pedal covers, scuff plates and shifter knob, special wheels, shaker 500 am/fm/6cd mp3 audio system, eight speakers, sirius satellite radio, sync communications system, and split-folding rear seats.  an optional track package includes upgraded front brakes, a recalibrated advancetrac system that allows later intervention, and the 3. 73:1 axle ratio. Track package ii will include pirelli 19-inch tires and wheels, upgraded front and rear brakes and heavier springs, shock absorbers and brakes along with recalibrated traction and yaw control systems designed for weekend racing. They tell us it is 12 percent quieter in wind noise than the outgoing car, 15 percent quieter in the case of the convertible. Ford also points to a 33 percent reduction in squeak and rattle performance, and a 10 percent improvement in speech intelligibility due to interior noise reductions, especially in the convertible.  the 3500-pound mustang uses welded steel unibody construction with front and rear subframes to mount the steering and suspension systems, with almost half the body weight in high-strength low-alloy steel. interiorinside, we found the front bucket seats significantly more comfortable and better looking than the slabs used in the 2009 models. Altogether, the 2010 mustang is much more refined than any previous model when it comes to noise, a much more comfortable car to be in, whether cruising or a full throttle.  the 2010 mustang has a completely new chiseled approach to interior design, with throwback instrument design complemented by softer-feeling surfaces throughout, and the use of real aluminum plates on the fascias, pedal covers, scuff plates and shifter knob. Interior ambient lighting in the door pockets, cupholders and footwells is a new interior feature, and the lighting colors can be changed through a range of 125 colors with the flip of a switch with the new mycolor system.  new interior and entertainment features for mustang include a rear-facing video camera, the sync voice-activated hands-free system for the first time in a mustang, featuring sirius satellite radio and satellite navigation with sirius travel link. The new leather-clad steering wheel is a massive affair with six brushed metal spokes in three groups of two, with cruise controls switches and controls for the sound system, a wheel that gives a very big feeling of command. The leather interiors are of a higher grade than ever, the console can now be locked to hide valuables. The instrument panel is made in a single piece.  we found the new mustang is much quieter than the old car, with improvements in wind noise, road noise, mirror noise and powertrain noise. The radio antenna is moved to the rear to eliminate noise, the wiper design is changed to flatter blades that don't make as much noise, the washer nozzles are inside the hood, and the mirrors are reshaped. The redline has been raised 250 rpm to 6500 rpm for 2010. The engine has two built-in calibrations for regular or premium fuel (the use of premium fuel adds up to 10 foot-pounds of torque between 1000 and 3000 rpm, they tell us).  the new engine gets its cold intake air from a system built into the grille, not under the hood, the lowest-restriction air intake system ever on the mustang, with an air induction sound pipe that goes right into the cockpit to make it more pleasing to the driver at full throttle. Ford says the fresh air system alone is worth three tenths of a second in 0-60 mph acceleration improvement because the engine makes much more power with cold air. On the exhaust side, the v-8 version gets 3. 5-inch exhaust pipes versus 3. 0-inch pipes on the last mustang, and the v-6 version gets 3. 0-inch exhaust pipes instead of 2. 5-inch pipes. The standard axle ratio is 3. 31:1, with two optional ratios, 3. 55:1 or 3. 73:1, which automatically comes with larger brakes.  the gt chassis has been upgraded and stiffened using parts and pieces from the 2009 bullitt mustang, which means it rides tauter, turns in quicker and has less pitch, dive and body roll than any previous mustang, as much as 20 percent less body roll. The gt rides on 235/50r18 tires, with 245/45r19 tires optional. If the 19-inch tire and wheel option is selected, the car will automatically be built with a strut tower brace under the hood to connect the two front struts for more strength and better, more accurate handling.  the new tires, whether 17-, 18-, or 19-inch, have been chosen for their much higher levels of both wet and dry grip, and ford says the 19-inch tires can produce skidpad performance exceeding 0. 9g, which is very, very good for such a low-priced car.  abs brakes, traction control and advancetrac yaw control are standard on all models. For track work, both the traction control and the yaw control can be turned off (but not the abs), and there is a sport mode which allows higher handling limits before traction and yaw controls are called in to save the day.  with all of that as prelude, the gt v-8 is an absolute blast to drive.
