Big power, big capability. introductionthe ford super duty pickups offer a pair of superb engines and can tow bumper-pull trailers that weigh up to 17,500 pounds or 24,500 with a fifth-wheel setup. Their bold, handsome exteriors are backed up by cabs that are attractive, functional and comfortable. Lariat and king ranch models are downright luxurious. The f-450 pickup that shares cab and wheel sizes with the f-250 and f-350 remains atop the towing ratings for pickups. the ford super duty got a major overhaul for 2011 with all-new diesel and gasoline engines, a new 6-speed automatic transmission, and new front styling. Changes for the 2012 model year are minor. the 6. 2-liter v8 gasoline engine that comes standard is rated at 385 hp in f-250 models and 316 hp on the majority of f-350 versions. Both engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission; no manual is offered. for 2012, the gas engine may be ordered with a cng/propane prep option. Also, short-bed models (6. 75-foot) offer a factory gooseneck hitch package previously reserved for long beds. there is nothing small about a super duty and even the shortest, plainest version represents three tons of mass. The new diesel is quiet by heavy-duty truck standards. super duty xl and xlt are designed for the cost/benefit analysis small businesses and independents use: a simple, fast trailer hookup, 4wd to get in/out of the job site, and a warm cab they can be blown clean with compressed air. Crew chief allows a dispatcher real-time truck location, speed, and fuel economy, potentially useful for the friday-night parent as well. as usual the top tow and payload ratings are up from mid-year 2011 models, often to numbers that require a commercial driver's license. Best-in-class numbers for heavy-duty pickups sometimes change several times in a year, but they typically apply to just one model. The super duty xl, xlt and lariat trims extend to most models. The super duty f-450 pickup, in long-bed, crew cab 4wd comes standard with the diesel. pricing for heavy-duty pickups takes megabytes given all the possible permutations. A step up in trim level may add a different cab, box length, or engine, which is why a supercab is $3500-$4700 more than a regular cab, and a crew cab is $5000-$6750 beyond a regular cab. Buying up from xl to xlt trim typically adds $2500-$3500, from xlt to lariat $4000-$7500, and lariat to king ranch $3000-$6500. the super duty xl is work-truck, low-budget in nature, with vinyl seats and flooring, black painted grille and bumpers, plain trim, and am/fm stereo, but it does include air conditioning, towing mirrors, trip computer, tilt/telescoping steering wheel and a weight-appropriate receiver hitch. Options are primarily mechanical in nature: diesel, locking differential, larger tires and wheels, snow plow prep, integrated fifth-wheel/gooseneck hitch prep package 380), camper package, off-road package for 4wd, tow command 230), auxiliary switches, dual or larger single alternators, reverse sensors, tailgate step, work solutions in-dash computer 1395) and tool link 1120). Supercabs also include flip-out rear side windows, super and crew get an overhead console, and the f-450 has forged aluminum wheels. super duty xlt adds chrome trim, aluminum wheels, 40/20/40 cloth front seat with under-seat lockable compartment, carpet, cd player, power windows/locks/mirrors, power-adjusted and heated towing mirrors, privacy glass, the integrated brake controller for single-rear wheel trucks, remote keyless entry, mykey, and cruise control. Dimensions are easily given in yards rather than inches. The power stroke badges have been given a hybrid-like green leaf with b20 in reference to the ability to burn biodiesel fuel, but only compared to other huge trucks might a super duty be considered green. regardless of bulging flares or flared nostrils no super duty would be mistaken for anything less than a full-size pickup even with nothing scalable within sight. The clamshell hood essentially shrink-wraps the diesel engine underneath, and the rounded edges and deeper air dam have improved the coefficient of aero drag from about 0. 45 to 0. 425 cd. By comparison, an aerodynamic sedan has a drag coefficient closer to 0. 27. super duty box sides have a large fuel door, which allows room for the additional diesel exhaust fluid fill for diesel versions. Reverse lights are at the top of the tail-lamp assembly, so far off the ground they are really nothing more than signaling devices that the truck is in reverse. The available rearview camera works well at night, however. Wheels range from 17 to 20 inches in diameter, all of aluminum except the base 17-inch steel wheels. towing mirrors that come optional work very well. They telescope and fold (manual or powered), and include two large convex mirror elements for safe rear vision with the widest street-legal trailers. The towing mirrors include signal repeaters that won't distract the driver. A camera mounted in the tailgate center latch housing linked to a display on the navigation screen or inside the rearview mirror gives the driver a good review of what's behind. an optional tailgate step is available that pops out of the tailgate for an easier step up to the bed; the step is rated at 1000 pounds. A grab handle flips up like a walking stick to further aid stepping up to the bed; the grab handle is rated at 300 pounds. We've found this setup handy at times and it doesn't usually get in the way. The tailgate also includes an assist so the very heavy tailgate feels less heavy. Unlike the toyota tundra, however, the assist doesn't do much to slow the tailgate when lowering it so be careful not to let it slam down.

2011 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. More power, more refinement. introductionthe ford mustang just keeps getting better. After a redesign for 2010, the 2011 mustang gets two new engines, as well as new transmissions and improvements to ride, handling, and noise. So the 2011 mustang represents a significant improvement over the superb 2010 edition of america's pony car, which was a large improvement over the 2004-2009 models, which was a major improvement over what came before that. the mustang has been in continuous production for 46 straight years, and more than 9 million mustangs have been built and sold to date. That gives the mustang the longest production run of any single model in ford history. the 2011 ford mustang comes in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and a glass-roof coupe. Each is available in both the traditional v6 model and the v8-powered mustang gt. Both engines are much more powerful this year. the 3. 7-liter v6 replaces the old 4. 0-liter v6, the new one producing 305 horsepower versus just 210 horses from the older, bigger engine. The new v8 marks the return of the 5. 0. An new all-aluminum engine, the 5. 0-liter v8 in the mustang gt produces 412 horsepower, which is far more than the 315 horsepower of the outgoing 4. 6-liter v8. Both new engines for 2011 get new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions versus the five-speeds of 2010. the ford shelby gt500 gains power for 2011, with a new aluminum version of the 5. 4-liter v8 producing 550 horsepower instead of the 500 ponies from the 2010 iron-block engine. We have not driven the new shelby gt500. Yet. the 2011 engines transform the mustang, providing the type of willing power pony car fans will love while improving fuel economy at the same time. The engines are lighter and the car has more rigidity, so the already impressive handling is that much better. the 2011 mustang is also quieter and more refined than ever, and, more importantly, it's an absolute blast to drive. It is quick off the mark with a brawny sound, crisp handling, a tight suspension, and much improved brakes. Put simply, this is the best mustang ever, and it is the model that other pony car makers should follow. in addition to the new engines and transmissions, the 2011 mustang gets an additional front z brace and a revised suspension to improve ride quality while also improving handling; new safety features including ford's mykey system, power side mirrors with integral blind spot mirrors, and fold-down rear headrests; electric power steering meant to improve fuel economy while also aiding steering feel; and new features, such as a performance package for v6 models and available brembo brakes for the gt. lineupthe 2011 mustang is offered in v6 base and premium models, v8-powered gt base and premium models, and the supercharged v8-powered gt500, each in coupe and convertible body styles. V6 models use a new 3. 7-liter v6 that makes 305 horsepower. Gt models have a new 5. 0-liter v8 that produces 412 horsepower. The gt500s have an updated 5. 4-liter v8 that produces 550 horsepower. A brembo brake package 1,695) adds brembo brake calipers, reprogrammed electronic stability control that allows more leeway for performance driving, a tire mobility kit, and p255/40r19 tires. premium versions of the v6 coupe 25,845) and v6 convertible 30,845) and gt coupe 32,845) and gt convertible 37,845) upgrade to leather upholstery, six-way power driver seat w/lumbar adjustment, aluminum interior trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel, shaker 500 am/fm/cd/mp3 audio, sirius satellite radio, ford sync entertainment and communications system, ipod adapter, wireless cell phone link, mycolor adjustable gauges, ambient lighting, and an automatic day/night rearview mirror. the shelby gt500 coupe 48,645) and convertible 53,645) come with leather/alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, leather/alcantara upholstery, xenon headlights, sport suspension, brembo brakes, and p255/40zr19 front and 285/35zr19 rear tires. The gt500 does not have a split-folding rear seat. An svt performance package 3,495) for the shelby includes a 3. 73 rear axle ratio, unique shift knob, special exterior stripes, rear spoiler with gurney flap, performance suspension with unique springs and rear shocks, p265/40zr19 front and p285/35zr20 rear tires on painted forged aluminum wheels. the v6 performance package adds a 3. 31 rear axle ratio; the front and rear stabilizer bars, front struts, and rear shocks and springs from the gt coupe; the rear lower control arm from the shelby gt500; 19-inch wheels with pirelli performance tires; the brake calipers from the mustang gt with performance friction pads; a strut tower brace; and electronic stability control calibration with a sport mode for performance driving. There's a sport appearance package 295) that just has the rear spoiler and body stripes. the mustang club of america special edition 995) for the v6 premium adds p235/50zr18 tires on sterling gray metallic-painted alloy wheels, dark stainless painted billet grille with tri-bar pony badge, side tape stripes, decklid tape, rear spoiler, carpeted floormats with pony logo, and automatic headlights. the california special 1,995) edition for the gt premium adds 19-inch painted alloy wheels, a chrome billet grille with tri-bar pony badge, unique lower front fascia with foglamps, pedestal spoiler, decklid badge with faux gas cap, instrument panel applique, carbon door panel inserts, carbon inserts for leather seating surfaces, carpeted floormats with logo, rear diffuser-style fascia, decklid tape and side scoops. a navigation system with voice recognition and real-time traffic information, and dual-zone automatic climate control come with the electronics group 2,340). The comfort group 595) adds heated front seats and a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. With its 2010 redesign, ford gave a nod to the 1969-70 mustang with a new face that features a wider grille opening. other elements of the redesign could be seen as tributes to the past. The coupe's fastback roofline, unchanged from the last generation, recalls the original 1964. 5 mustang. The chamfered three-element taillamps, which house sequential turn signals that blink from the inside lamp to the outside lamp, were first found on the 1964 thunderbird, then the 1967-68 shelby mustangs and late '60s mercury cougars. And the hockey stick lower character line could be viewed as an homage to the lower portion of the side coves found on mustangs from 1964 to '68. compared to the last generation body style, ford said the 2010 mustang had 23 percent less aerodynamic lift at the front with a new slotted panel installed under the radiator to direct air, 50 percent better in front/rear lift balance, and seven percent less aerodynamic drag. For 2011, the company has lowered the front air dam and added a front splitter and an underbody aero shield to improve aerodynamics by another 4 percent. ford took several steps to improve noise, vibration and harshness for the 2010 model year, and the company has done even more for 2011. Additional sound-deadening material on the instrument panel and a rear wheel arch liner help drivers hear the sounds they want (namely the engine) and avoid the sounds that can be a distraction (such as dash creaks and tire noise). the 3453-pound mustang (3605 pounds for the gt) uses welded steel unibody construction with front and rear subframes to mount the steering and suspension systems, with almost half the body weight in high-strength low-alloy steel. It is by far the lightest of the new breed of pony cars, beating the camaro by 300 pounds and the dodge challenger by as much as 500 pounds. The weight savings are a definite advantage. the convertible comes standard with a power top with a glass rear window. The top uses two latches that the driver must operate, but they're within arm's reach and they latch and unlatch easily. interioranyone who hasn't been in a mustang for a couple of years will want to take a look at the 2011 model. The interior was much improved for 2010 and there are even more improvements for 2011. The front bucket seats are significantly more comfortable and better looking than the slabs used in the 2009 models, though they could still use more lateral support. The aforementioned noise.

Any of the current mustangs is quieter, better built, better equipped and more refined than ever, but still visually engaging and good fun to drive. improvements for 2012 include more standard features and a selectable power steering system that changes steering effort and feedback from comfort to normal to sport at the driver's selection. the big news, however, is the return of the mustang boss 302. It's a modern take on one the great cars in american road-racing lore. the mustang is available as a coupe, a convertible or a unique glass-roof coupe. The top-selling mustang v6 and gt models are offered in all three body styles, in standard trim or a more feature-laden premium level, with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Even the extra-powerful boss and shelby gt500 mustangs deliver reasonable fuel-economy, given the performance potential. The level of fun varies primarily with the potency of the engine selected. the standard mustang v6 makes the basic stylistic statement and comes well equipped for about $23,000 with destination charge 28,000 for the convertible). It also delivers 31 mpg highway with the automatic, according to the epa, and it makes quiet, comfortable daily transportation. It gets 26 mpg highway, and is just as easy to live with as the v6, with the same 13. 2 feet of trunk space and folding rear seat. the new boss 302 is geared toward enthusiast drivers who look forward to track days. Its 5. 0-liter v8 is massaged to rev higher and deliver a more high-strung 444 horsepower, and everything else in the boss is tuned to sharpen its reflexes. To set this mustang apart, ford builds each with either a black or white roof panel, color-coordinated to the c-shaped graphics on its flanks. A low, aggressive splitter on the boss's front air dam is also functional, improving engine cooling and adding downforce to the front tires. The boss 302 is a good looking car, striking for sure, and nearly impossible not to notice. All variants start with a welded steel unibody (as opposed to a separate body and chassis), and half the body weight is high-strength, low-alloy steel. Mustang is by far the lightest of the new breed of pony cars, beating the chevy camaro by 300 pounds and the dodge challenger by as much as 500 pounds. The weight savings provide a definite advantage, in both performance and fuel economy. ford took several steps to improve noise, vibration and harshness control when it reworked the mustang for 2010. Additional sound-deadening material on the instrument panel and a rear wheel arch liners help drivers hear the sounds they want (namely the engine) and avoid the sounds that can be a distraction (such as dash creaks and tire noise). .
